Literature is literally "an acquaintance with letters" as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary (from the Latin "littera" meaning an individual written character (letter)). The word "literature," as a common noun, can refer to any form of writing, such as essays; while "Literature," the proper noun, refers to a whole body of literary work, world-wide or relating to a specific culture.

  10. Literature is literally "acquaintance with letters" The term has generally come to identify a collection of texts or work of art, which in Western culture are mainly prose, both fiction and non-fiction, drama and poetry. In much, if not all of the world, texts can be oral as well, and include such genres as epic, legend, myth, ballad, plus other forms of oral poetry, and the folktale.

Nations can have literatures, as can corporations, philosophical schools or historical periods. Popular belief commonly holds that the literature of a nation, for example, comprises the collection of texts which make it a whole nation.

literature can be a catalyst for the inner development of readers, that it can create an
aesthetically, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, intellectually expansive experience that can be
meaningful and satisfying (depending on what you read)

  13. The word, Literature, comes from the Latin littera. Essentially, this word means "acquaintance with letters." When most people use the word, "Literature," they are likely defining literature as being a body of work that represents a language or a people. Essentially, literature is one way for one culture or subculture to codify and transfer their cultural values and traditions from one generation to the next. This is one reason why the question "What is Literature?" is so important. When we talk about the definition of literature, as being the cultural artifacts of a people and their way of life, then how we select the works that qualify as literature is essentially making an argument about a way of life for a given culture and we can study a given culture by looking at the literature of the culture.
